Old Testament
Research areas of the Old Testament Department in Bonn are the history of literature and religion as well as exegesis and theology of the Old Testament.
New Testament
In addition to the study of the New Testament and emerging Christianity, its history and literature, the focus is on Ancient Judaism and Greco-Roman Antiquity.
Church History
Traditionally, the main areas of research in church history in Bonn are the history of the Early Church, the Reformation Churches, and the Church in the Rhineland.
Systematic Theology
The Department is broken down into three disciplines: Systematic Theology and Hermeneutics, Systematic Theology/Dogmatics and Ethics, Systematic Theology/Ethics.
Practical Theology and Religious Education
At the Practical Theology Department there are two main research areas – one focusing on Practical Theology, the other Religious Education.
Intercultural Theology
The field of Intercultural Theology includes research on questions and topics relating to the intersections of religion, culture, politics, and global society.

Doctoral degree regulations
Are you considering doing a doctorate at the Faculty of Protestant Theology in Bonn? We are delighted that you are interested!
You can currently do your doctorate at our faculty with a supervisor or doctoral supervisor. If you do not have any previous qualifications, you will also complete a structured doctoral program with courses.

Ph.D. regulations
From the summer semester 2024, students will have the opportunity to obtain a Ph.D. at the Faculty of Protestant Theology.
A cumulative doctorate is also possible.
Unlike the classic doctoral program with a Dr. theol. degree, the Ph.D. program does not require any knowledge of German and knowledge of old languages depending on the focus. This makes it an attractive option for international students as well.

Habilitation regulations
For researchers in the postdoctoral phase, the Faculty of Protestant Theology offers the possibility of habilitation, which leads to the determination of teaching qualification (facultas legendi) and, if desired, also to the award of teaching authorization (venia legendi) as a private lecturer.
Admission requirements are a theological doctorate from a Protestant theological faculty in Germany, a relevant doctorate from a German university or a doctorate from a foreign university recognized as equivalent by the faculty.
